An interesting 'Nottingham Air Raid Warden' armband. Attached to it is a separate patch with three silver rank chevrons (similar to police sergeant stripes).

A comparison of the front and rear of the three main styles of ARP breast badge. Three embroidered, one woven (top right) and one printed (bottom right).
Not often for sale is this tome, 'Night & Fire Spotting' by Francis Chichester. The author used his aeronautical experience to publish a technical book about bombing in 1941. It was primarily targeted at businesses to reduce the loss of production due to false air raids.
Chichester, a pre-war aviator, joined the RAFVR in 1941 as an Air Navigation Specialist. In the late 1950s, he took up yachting. Between 27 August 1966 and 28 May 1967, he became the first person to achieve a true circumnavigation of the world solo from west to east via the three capes. He was knighted in July 1967. Following on from the recent blog about BRISTOL area markings, the local authority also has several other badges manufactured for its ARP / CD services. All the badges appear to be made of dark blue cotton twill fabric, featuring red embroidery and a merrow edge.
If you have any more Bristol CD services badges in your collection, please send photos to me using the Contact page. An early-war combination of the oval ARP badge and an area title for wear on bluette overalls. After searching online, the best match for the 'C&SUDC' is Chislehurst and Sidcup Urban District Council. The embroidery style is sometimes described as 'chain link', and is probably the least seen type (after the embroidered and printed versions). I'm currently not fully aware of the manufacturing process involved.
Formed in 1934 during the Kent Review Order, the Chislehurst and Sidcup Urban District Council merged the Urban District Councils (UDCs) of Chislehurst and Sidcup, and the parishes of North Cray, Mottingham and St. Paul's Cray. The council was abolished in 1965, with areas north of the A20 joining the London Borough of Bexley, and those south of the A20 joining the London Borough of Bromley. |
