For members of the Civil Defence that worked on Casualty Evacuation Trains a special breast badge was created for their battledress blouses. The below images detail a sealed pattern ARP Pattern 83 example dated 17 December 1941. Sealed patterns were sent to manufacturers to copy to ensure consistency of size and colour etc.
I am indebted to Roger Miles for sharing these images. You can find lots of interesting home front items for sale on his Home Front Collection website.

I recently blogged about a Dutch 'CD' armband issued close to the war's end. Jon Mills has sent me the following information regarding a similar armband but with light blue lettering made by the GPO. The lettering on the Dutch example looks white when compared to the below example, but it could be faded. The design of the GPO armband looks identical to the Dutch example. This armband is noted as "ARP Pattern 194 Armband, Industrial Civil Defence - Light blue printed on dark blue". See this page for a list of ARP Pattern Numbers.
The previous source mentioned that the Dutch armbands were issued by British forces and it would now follow that these were indeed British in origin. I am indebted to Roger Miles for sharing these images of two ARP badges issued by the Glasgow Corporation Gas Department. Following on from a recent blog, these badges also include the character Mr Therm.
There are not that many photos of Supplementary Fire Parties (SFP) and this was sent to me by Roger Miles. I assume early war due to the armband and Mk. II helmet. Unfortunately I cannot make out what the lapel badges being worn are.
A nice ARP badge of a design I had not seen before. The character on this badge is Mr Therm. The character was created by Eric Fraser for the Gas, Light & Coke Company in 1931. Mr. Therm appeared on many badges, publications and other material related to the gas industry and finally disappeared in the 1960s.
The ARP badge is currently on eBay. |
