Two rare ARP-related car bumper badge mascots for Fisher & Ludlow Ltd. (Fisholow). The car badges are made by Fattorini who made thousands of different industrial ARP lapel badges (the design of these bumper badges mirrors a design seen on lapel badges). The company began in the mid-19th-century in the Smethwick area of Birmingham. As the company grew they moved in car body panels and during the second world war were involved in manufacturing Lancaster bombers wings and shell casings. I am indebted to Steve Taylor for sharing the below images.

A very rare lapel badge for Civil Defence Region XII South Eastern Region sold on eBay for nearly £50. I'd not seen anything like this badge before and thought it might have gone for considerably more. Region 12 was based in Tunbridge Wells and covered Kent as well as East and West Sussex.
A recent blog covered the 12 regions and their headquarters' locations. Update: Jon Mills was kind enough to share this photo of the Region XII's Regional Commissioner's chauffeuse wearing an identical badge on her side cap. Over the years I've seen a variety of privately purchased metal identity bracelets owned by members of the Wardens' Service and other Civil Defence groups. The below is a fibre disc, similar to those issued in the armed forces, for an ARP Warden in Worcester City.
This rare ARP Report Centre Staff badge is of a design I had not seen previously. The generic wording would allow the badge to be bought and issued by any local authority for members of its Report Centre. A nice item which is sure to command a good price on eBay.
Several British colonies copied the ARP badge and added a scroll beneath to denote the location. This ARP badge was issued in the Straits Settlements, a number of provinces locations on the Malay peninsular (known these days as Singapore and Malaysia). I cannot make out the silver marks but assume it was a locally manufactured badge.
Similar badges with scrolls are known to exist for Hong Kong, Kenya and Malta. Some forgeries of these badges have been seen but I believe this one shown to be genuine. |
