I am indebted to Roger Miles for sharing these images of two ARP badges issued by the Glasgow Corporation Gas Department. Following on from a recent blog, these badges also include the character Mr Therm.

There are not that many photos of Supplementary Fire Parties (SFP) and this was sent to me by Roger Miles. I assume early war due to the armband and Mk. II helmet. Unfortunately I cannot make out what the lapel badges being worn are.
A nice ARP badge of a design I had not seen before. The character on this badge is Mr Therm. The character was created by Eric Fraser for the Gas, Light & Coke Company in 1931. Mr. Therm appeared on many badges, publications and other material related to the gas industry and finally disappeared in the 1960s.
The ARP badge is currently on eBay. This SFP Torquay armband recently sold on eBay for £117. When I posted it on Facebook a few people challenged the authenticity of the item, mainly because they hadn't seen the armband before and lived in the area. However, it's the genuine article, an identical armband having been seen on the Military Heraldry Society previously.
There are quite a few examples of helmet carriers (but limited photographic evidence of them in use). This interesting design appears to be one piece and without a string to tie it closed. I assume some elastic-type cord/string is within the seams.
The helmet and carrier appeared on eBay with a £395 price tag (plus £7 shipping). |
