Coming from the same shed as the previously blogged Avro Aircraft Zuckerman helmet, is this WVS Mobile Canteen No. 4 example. The seller is notorious amongst collectors for fabricating all sorts of militaria. This is another recently lettered Zuckerman with distressing added to give a whiff of authenticity. At time of writing, bids on the tat bazaar had driven the price to £156. A waste of money and the seller is an utter disgrace.

Hi, the small hole drilled in the brim denotes the material quality.

The hole on a Zuckerman has nothing whatsoever to do with the steel quality. The hole was purely for manufacturing use and used for hanging the helmets when being spray painted and also to tie bundles of helmets together. Holes on Mk. II helmets did confer the type of steel used.

The hole and size of helmet was to be at the back of the helmet but the vast majority of people misread the leaflet and wore the helmet back to front. This is why you see the vast majority of helmets with markings on the same side as the hole. Your comment will be posted after it is approved.
